Letters from the Privy Council
Scope and Content
This collection contains the call numbers X.d.30 (1-58).
The majority of these Privy Council letters concern troops and provisions for the English garrisons in Ireland. Several others respond to individuals' petitions (6, 15, 45) or concern pardons (2, 53); (9) orders the release from Cambridge prison of Familist heretics; (13) calls for an inventory and inquiry into damages of Castle Caernarfon; (23) authorizes payments for Sir John Leveson's work on Upnor Castle; (42) provides for more post-horses to bring James I and his train from Berwick to London on his accession; (49) orders the reforestation of Blackmore, Essex and Pewsham, Wiltshire; and (58) concerns raising money for defense against pirates.
Most letters referring to financial matters are addressed to the Lord High Treasurer, generally William Cecil, Baron Burghley (Lord High Treasurer from July 1572 until 4 August 1598) or Thomas Sackville, Baron Buckhurst (later Earl of Dorset; Lord High Treasurer from 15 May 1599 until 19 April 1608), although two such letters are to William Paulet, Marquis of Winchester (Lord High Treasurer from 3 February 1550 until 10 March 1572).
