Biographical note

Abstract:

Henry Fitz Alan (also spelled FitzAlan and Fitzalan), Earl of Arundel (1512-1580), was a member of the English aristocracy who held political offices under four Tudor monarchs -- Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary I, and Elizabeth I -- including positions as Lord Chamberlain (1546-1550), Lord Steward (1553-1564), and member of the Privy Council (from 1546, with some interruptions, until his death). He also became known as a patron of musicians (including Thomas Tallis) and a book collector, assisted by the historian and cartographer Humphrey Llwyd.

He had acquired the title of Baron Maltravers in 1534, prior to succeeding his father, William Fitzalan, as Earl of Arundel in 1544. His grandson, Philip Howard, inherited the earldom, while his son-in-law John Lumley, Baron Lumley, inherited possessions including his library.
