Abstract

Materials by and relating to C. Walter Hodges, illustrator and Shakespearean scholar, including: production, set and costume designs, sketched reconstructions of Elizabethan theaters, book illustrations, and designs for a Shakespeare's Globe project in Detroit.

Arrangement

Items are arranged in 12 series. Series 1: Study sketches for the reconstruction of Elizabethan theaters; Series 2: Designs and sketches for settings and costumes at the Mermaid Theatre; Series 3: Original illustrations for book The Globe Restored , published by Ernest Benn; Series 4: Encyclopaedia Britannica Films, production designs for a series of educational films; Series 5: Book illustrations and sketches (miscellaneous); Series 6: Original illustrations and studies for book Shakespeare's Second Globe ; Series 7: Manuscript, working papers and complete illustrations for book of short stories Playhouse tales ; Series 8: St. George's Elizabethan Theatre; Series 9: Shakespeare's Globe in America: Drawings for a project in Detroit; Series 10: Projects and sketches (miscellaneous); Series 11: Miscellaneous sketches; Series 12: Miscellaneous materials.

Each series collocates items from a given project or type of project, for example ART Box H688 no.6 contains original illustrations for Hodges' book Shakespeare's second globe . The first 10 series were designated by Hodges himself. Within each group may be subseries for categories within categories, for example no.2 as a whole is dedicated to costume and design drawings for productions at the Mermaid Theatre, and no 2.1 contains only costume designs for the Mermaid production of the play The Tempest .

Acquisition Information

The C. Walter Hodges Collection of Elizabethan and Other Theatre Drawings was acquired by the Folger Shakespeare Library from C. Walter Hodges in 1986 (accession number 227451). Additional gifts to the collection made by Hodges to the library were made in 1987, 1988 and 1990.

Extent includes ART Box H688 no.7.1-7.3 which have been transferred to the manuscript collection of the Folger Shakespeare Library and reclassified as Y.d.616 (1-21).
